It is better to do this sorting as soon as you have already confirmed your new home. Scrutinize every detail of the house structure and make your own floor plan even before the date of the move.
You will see that it is much easier to unpack if you have decided earlier on which room will be the master bedroom, living room, den, kitchen etc. Begin to plan the arrangement of big furniture like the sofa, dining table, or bed. This will make your sorting much easier. You can immediately see which of your current stuff fits into the new home.
